Bye-election to the 14/Yaiskul Assambly constituency which became vacant earlier after the demise of Elangbam Kunjeswor, MLA, of the Congress, has been fixed today by the Election Commission of India (ECI), joint CEO of state government N Praveen.
As per the notification, elections to the 14-Yaikul AC will be held on December 19, Saturday.

Party representatives have called for a halt to early registration of voters to avoid objections that lead to apathy.
Speaking at a workshop to evaluate the last general elections, the representatives said voter registration should be as close to the polling as possible.
They said the first registration for this year's general elections was in 2007 and after this there had been a lot of movement and relocation by voters.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) — More than 1,300 people have already voted on whether to let the Charles Town Races&Slots put table games in its casino.
Early voting in Jefferson County began Nov. 13 and continues through Dec. 2.
Wendy Evangelisti, an assistant clerk for elections, says 1,376 votes had been cast at the county courthouse by noon Friday.

The state has decided not to appeal a judge's decision that allows South Dakota's new smoking ban law to be referred to a public vote in the 2010 election.
The decision was announced Friday by Attorney General Marty Jackley and Secretary of State Chris Nelson.
The law would ban smoking in bars and casinos.

Residents who would like to serve on the Berkeley Board of Education should submit a resume to the board office.
The board is seeking a replacement for Jeffrey Suarez, 50, whose term expires April 2011.
He was elected to the board April 2008, but has missed at least three monthly board meetings in a row because he is working in Afghanistan training a police force there.

While assuring that 100 percent of India's electorate will be issued Electronic Photo-Identity Cards (EPIC) in two years time, Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla said here on Friday that to increase the involvement of the youth in the election process, the Commission is contemplating issuing EPICs to college students who a re temporarily living outside the area of their residence.

The fiasco of the elections in Afghanistan has been widely lamented.
Most laments focus on a single obvious fact: by winning a new term through fraud at the polls, President Hamid Karzai has weakened his legitimacy, endangered the already tepid support he enjoys in Washington DC, and handed the Taliban another piece of evidence, if one is needed, that his regime is corrupt.
